A person who contaminated sweets with sedative and distributed them to youngsters at a summer program in the region has confessed to sexual offences against two young males who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and one adult fell ill at Stathern Lodge in July.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

Yet, he denied a single sexual charge he was charged with, which was involving a young boy.

The accused was kept in jail before a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

The legal representative, presenting evidence, described Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She said his victims were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer program which he ran.

Ruben engaged in a "treat game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had conducted this practice with the young males "for many years", and children had previously become sick the next day.

She stated the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had concerns in summer 2025.

The prosecutor continued: "This year his stepchild had worries about the situation, for good reason.

"They decided to have a look in the man's possessions."

Mrs Prior KC said items including infant oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were found, and his stepson alerted the law enforcement about his worries.

She stated the man continued to engage in the "candy game" with six children that time - that Saturday - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"The police had not gone out by that point," she continued.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was reviewing the police response of the events.

The prosecutor stated the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so the stepson called the authorities again.

She stated the man then engaged in the "candy game" in a space of five youngsters.
