The Fast-Food Giant Takes Down AI-Generated Holiday Commercial After Backlash.
The global fast-food chain has pulled a Christmas advert produced via Artificial Intelligence after receiving significant criticism on social media.
The 45-second spot was created using AI-generated video and was originally published online for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.
Social Media Criticism and Removal
Shortly after its release, viewers on social media criticized the employment of AI in the advert. Many described it as "creepy" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This moment is an valuable learning as we examine the effective use of generative technology," said a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.
The advert was produced for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed various scenarios that might go awry over the Christmas break, using the tagline "the worst time of the year".
A Growing Trend of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that incorporate AI tools have become a growing trend among large corporations, particularly for the holiday campaign season.
- Coca-Cola has recently released back-to-back AI-generated holiday commercials.
- Inherent Limitations: Since clips produced using current AI video tools are more likely to distort the longer they run, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be only short in length.
- Industry Concerns: The video also sparked fears about the replacement of human roles in the advertising sector, with some commenters noting it could reduce work for camera crews.
Defense from the Creators
Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.
Bridge claimed, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then edited during the edit "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".
"This was not an experiment," Bridge asserted. "It was a finished piece."
Divisive Audience Sentiment
While the McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the sentiment for some AI-generated campaigns has been more mixed.
For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday ad from another major brand reportedly achieved a significant "favorable response" from viewers.
However, several companies have also faced criticism for using the technique in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics called "cheap" and "disturbing".
The episode underscores the ongoing discussion within the advertising and production sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and audience reception.
